Impact: No economic loss from growing Phylanthus amarus for eradicating chronic Hepatitis B carriage. The first paper in Lancet claimed 56% efficacy of the plant for the condition but our study (Lancet 1990; 335:1600-1) failed to confirm as well as those other studies that followed. Study of etiology of acute undifferentiated fever in Thailand led to the conclusions that scrub typhus is not uncommon, that diagnostic reagents for scrub typhus have to be developed and that doxycycline is used to treat acute undifferentiated fever if duration of the fever is longer than 10-4 days. This study is not published but is presented as a full report to the Ministry of Public Health. The cut-off point for diagnosis of melioidosis by indirect hemagglutination test in endemic area is higher than recommended in international textbooks. (Mahidol University)
